Catalog design for Portland State University’s Art Practice BFA class of 2020.
Guiding Question
How can we tell a cohesive story about the creative work of a diverse group of artists?
Approach
The exhibit’s title is named for the studio workspace where this cohort developed much of their work as a group of emerging artists. The catalog design centered around interviews between small groups of artists— facilitated by Portland curator Ashley Stull Meyers. This gave the artists a platform to speak about their work organically, beyond the confines of the traditional artist statement. Within the catalog, the interviews preceded color-coded sections which presented each student’s work within the context of the group and the larger graduating class. The continuous use of warm tones provides unity throughout and references a common theme found in all of the student’s work. A gradient was then used to unite all of the colors on the cover and in promotional materials for the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.
